Lars Van Meijel won the Pinheiros Altos Classic with a solid 9 under par performance to win by a single stroke from four other players.

It was Gary King who led the way after the first day with a 7 under par 65 to create a 2-shot advantage over the Dutchmen Van Meijel, Lars Keunen and the Portuguese player, Joao Carlota.

On the second day Gary Hurley improved on his first round 70 with a 6 under par 66 to post a clubhouse total of 8 under par for the leaders to chase.

Carlota played steadily to return a 3 under par 69 to join Hurley in the clubhouse lead and with the leading group approaching the eighteenth hole with King on 7 under and the two Dutchmen on 8 under par it looked a certainty that there would be a 4 or 5-way play-off.

With King and Keunen on the green in 2 and Van Meijel short on the front of the green for 2 it looked for all the world like a play-off was inevitable.

That was until Van Meijel chipped in for an unlikely birdie to break the deadlock and go to 9 under par which meant that Keunen had hole out to advance into a play-off.

King holed for a birdie to elevate his position by a place into joint second and with Keunen just missing his effort for birdie it meant that Van Meijel had won the Pinheiros Altos Classic in his first Portugal Pro Golf Tour event.
