James Maw earns Penina win

James Maw finished his second round Birdie, Eagle to snatch victory in “The Penina Classsic “from the grasp of David Dixon, who earlier had shot a 10 under par 63 to establish the clubhouse lead on 11 under par.

Maw had set the pace after round one scoring an excellent 5 under par 68 and that total was equalled by Portugals João Carlota and Tiago Cruz with, Tom Hayward, Michael Watson and former Walker Cup star David Boote on 4 under par.

On the second day Dixon stormed round the legendary Penina Championship course in an amazing 10 under par to set an impressive target of 11 under for the others too catch.

Jamie Abbott just failed to equal Dixons total, despite finishing Birdie, Eagle and we generally thought that was that but with Maw escaping from places that would have baffled “Harry Houdini” and holing putts for fun, it was far from being over.

Coming to the final couple of holes Maw was one shot behind Dixon but with both the last 2 holes being par fives anything could happen and it certainly did when Maw birdied the seventeenth to draw level with Dixon.

An impressive Eagle 3 at the last saw Maw safely home by 2 shots, from a disappointed Dixon, who is surely destined to win again soon.
