Sam Locke has gone from brewing Lattes in the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre, too Open Champion Silver Medallist and now a stunning first professional win in the Portugal Pro Golf Tours, Palmares Open.
Locke’s wining total of 23 under par for the three rounds of the Championship was nothing short of brilliant as he put together rounds of 65, 64 and 64 over the Lagos / Praia combination at Palmares, which is no push-over.
Locke left several European and Challenge tour players in his wake, including runner up Ryan Evans, Richard Mansell and Jonathan “Jigger” Thompson.
In a tournament full of excitement “Jigger”, after a fairly ordinary first 7 holes of his second round, reeled off 9 Birdies in a row to tie USPGA’s Kevin Chappell’s World record and leapfrog into contention with a stunning 10 under par 62.
Locke’s final round was almost a procession, that contained 6 Birdies, an Eagle and no Bogies and that gave him a comfortable 4 shot victory over Evans, who in turn shaded Mansell by a single shot, with World record holder “Jigger Thompson a shot further back in third place.
